Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT), also commonly referred to as endovenous laser ablation of the saphenous vein (ELAS), is a treatment alternative to the old fashioned surgical vein stripping. This is a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for treating saphenous vein reflux disease. Performed on an outpatient basis in our Best Vein Care of Huntsville office under local anesthesia and ultrasound guidance, the physician places a catheter into your vein either at the knee or higher. A tiny laser fiber is then passed through the catheter and positioned at the top of your greater saphenous vein or small saphenous vein. As the laser fiber and catheter are withdrawn, the laser emits short bursts of energy that heat the vein wall, which causes the collagen in the vein wall to contract and stay closed. Your body then naturally reroutes the blood flow from the previously diseased vessel (now ablated vessel) to your healthier vessels in the deep venous system. Following the procedure, a bandage is placed on the treated leg along with ace wrapping before the patient walks out of the procedure. The procedure takes less than an hour with minimal to no discomfort during or post-procedure with patients resuming your normal activities that day with very few restrictions.
